DAS Hintersee, right in the heart of the village
Nestled in the Salzkammergut, surrounded by the impressive Osterhorn range, lies our Hotel DAS HINTERSEE. For four generations, we have taken care of our guests with great warmth, from booking to departure, ensuring they can relax in a family atmosphere and be spoiled with fine cuisine.
Our house has been run as a guesthouse for 240 years. This is proven by the inscription on a ridge beam, discovered during renovation work in 1950.
The guesthouse has been family-owned since 1935. Sebastian and Anna Helminger ran the guesthouse until 1973. Since then, Erika and Albert Ebner senior have welcomed the many regular guests.
Since 1990, the second generation, Albert and Petra Ebner, has been dedicated to the wellbeing of our guests. Their daughters Lisa and Anna completed their studies at the Klessheim-Salzburg tourism school and now actively support the hotel operations.
With the construction of the 5 chalets and adjoining "Zuhäuser" as well as a spacious underground car park, steps were taken towards becoming a 4-star hotel in 2022.
With the new reception came the in-house KTM e-mountain bike rental with an attached bike shop, which transforms into the in-house HAGAN touring ski test centre in winter.
A native of Hintersee – Fritz Kurrent
The architect and researcher Fritz Kurrent was born in Hintersee near Salzburg in 1931.
After attending primary school in Hintersee, he went on to the technical school (today's HTBLA) in Salzburg. From 1949 to 1952, he studied architecture in the master class of Clemens Holzmeister at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
In 1950, together with Johannes Spalt, Wilhelm Holzbauer and Otto Leitner, he founded the "Arbeitsgruppe 4". With this group, he realised major works of Austrian modernism of the 1950s and 1960s in his home country.
The Parsch Church in Salzburg (1953–1956), with its refined simplicity, still reflects the influence of their teacher, Clemens Holzmeister.
At the St. Josef College in Salzburg-Aigen, a clear, rational concept is combined with a contemplative atmosphere carried by warm light.
As an architectural researcher, Friedrich Kurrent intensively studied the most significant
Protagonists of Viennese Modernism, alongside Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos and Josef Frank.
His friend Friedrich Achleitner characterised him as follows when he was awarded the "Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art" in 1992:
"Friedrich Kurrent is a moralist of the incorruptible, yet also exhausting and inconvenient kind, whom one cannot easily forgive for usually being right."
The architect campaigned persistently and successfully for the preservation of Spittelberg, the typical Viennese suburban quarter.
In 1958, Friedrich Kurrent met his life partner, the artist Maria Biljan-Bilger, born in Radstadt in 1912. He valued her life experience, her stance during the Nazi era, and her artistic creative power.
In 1947, she was a founding member of the legendary ART-CLUB. She took part in numerous biennials (Venice and São Paulo) and sculptor symposiums (St. Margarethen).

Rudolf Karsch was born in 1902 in Böhmisch-Kamnitz. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts under Professor Löffler and in the master class at the Vienna Academy of Graphic Arts under Rudolf Jettmar.
After the war, Karsch worked at the Salzburg Künstlerhaus and lived with his family in Hintersee.
